Nick Cunningham-Moorat – Chief Executive Officer

Nick is an avid diver, racer, entrepreneur and father. He brings to the team a strong commercial skillset and his desire to explore and share the wonders of the ocean. He brings 30 years of experience in global business and entrepreneurial endeavors and relishes the opportunity to challenge the impossible.

Matt Silver-Vallance – Chief Business Development Officer

Matt is an entrepreneur, explorer, and ocean enthusiast passionate about using innovation and competition to solve big challenges. He believes racing drives excellence and out-of-the-box thinking, and he applies this mindset to the subsea environment, combining sports and technology to create a deeper understanding of the ocean.

With a background in healthcare, Matt specializes in strategic management and complex quality improvement initiatives. He thrives on assembling teams to tackle seemingly impossible challenges in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. His approach focuses on aligning adventure with meaningful impact, enhancing humanity’s well-being.

One of his most notable feats was floating from Robben Island to Cape Town using 160 helium balloons, a project that took four years and 140 people to execute.

As part of the SubRacing Series, Matt explores how high-resolution ocean data can drive better diagnostics, similar to healthcare, and how this will optimize a team’s ability to win. He believes that understanding the ocean as a single entity can lead to natural solutions through data-driven insights. His exceptional skills include team-building, problem-solving, and motivating people toward ambitious, fun, and impactful goals.

Professor William Megill – Race Director, Human-Powered Division

William Megill is Professor of Biomimetics at Rhine Waal University in Germany. A sea captain and research diver with degrees in physics and marine biology, William ran a marine ecology research organisation for twenty years in Canada and Mexico. He and his students started racing submarines in 2004, and in 2011 he founded the European International Submarine Races in Gosport, England. He now brings his expertise as its Race Director to a similar role in the SubRacing Series. 

Brian Goldthorpe – Head of Marketing, Head of Development for the Canary Islands

Brian spent many years in large organisations with a variety of senior roles in IT, Marketing and Customer Service, before running a Dive Centre for 20 years in Gran Canaria.

Having a mix of traditional Marketing training and IT experience on networked PC’s is a perfect background for developing impactful and well thought out web based strategies and assets.

He follows a family tradition of amateur photography and loves to scuba dive and watch and photograph the marine life in Gran Canaria where he has lived for the last 20 years.

Louise Robinson – Head of Projects

Louise has managed the day-to-day running’s of a complex property development business in South Africa including all financials, and co-ordinated with the building companies involved on various site projects. In 2022, she became the project manager for the SubRacing Series using her strengths in organisational skills and working closely with team members.

 

Michael Machutchon – Head of Science and Investigation

Michael is a specialist marine geophysicist with over 18 yrs of marine project experience, being the project leader on more than 70% of these. He has vast experience in a variety of advanced geophysical post-processing techniques and understanding of coastal, near- and offshore morphodynamics.  His responsibilities include planning, costing, implementing, and reporting on all project phases. He is a  specialist in the use of dGPS and RTK systems, single- and multibeam bathymetric systems, sidescan sonars, single channel seismic systems, marine magnetometers and laser scanners. He is  internationally published in peer reviewed journals and conferences and has authored or co-authored over 120 commercial scientific reports. he is incredibly passionate about marine geoscience and always open to new ideas and techniques to improve our understanding of this dynamic environment. 

Jim Deane – Chief Information & Technology Officer

Jim had five decades of experience in software, design, development, and deployment, in many roles from programmer to Director of a large financial services software company.

Jim’s fascination with all things science and technology have directed his career in the pursuit of ever more complex problems to solve.

Apart from working, Jim enjoys science fiction and fantasy, playing with electronics, flying light aircraft, gliders and helicopters and a little diving.
